For My Listening Pleasure

I haven’t done a “CD of the week” entry in a while, so I figured I would list what new bands or albums I am currently listening to.

Damien Rice
Why the hell I didn’t start listening to this guy before I will never know. Awesome, awesome, awesome laid back easy listening acoustic music. Technically classified “Irish Folk”, which 5 years ago I probably wouldn’t have listened to, but for some reason I really like his music. Check out the album “O”. artist website

Snow Patrol
I purchased their album “Final Straw” because I liked the song “run”, so when Snow Patrol released their latest album “Eyes Open”, I decided to pick it up. These guys have a pretty unique sound, but I would say if you like Coldplay, U2, or Death Cab For Cutie then you would most likely like Snow Patrol. artist website

AFI
AFI is another band that had a pretty decent first major album that I liked, so I decided to check out their latest “Decemberunderground”. The jury is still out with this album. I need to listen to it again to get a better grasp on it. It is much different than their previous album. It is like they found out what samplers, and synths were, and decided to use them on every song. It almost has some techno influences in it, which I don’t really care for. Not a bad album overall though.

Angels & Airwaves
Angels & Airwaves is Tom DeLonge’s (Blink 182) latest band. I have never been a huge Blink 182 fan although I have all their albums; they always seemed a little immature to me (if that makes sense). The self titled Angels & Airwaves album is supposed to be more mature, so I decided to check it out. Overall I really like this album. If you were a fan of the song “All of this” Blink did with Robert Smith of the Cure than you will love this album, as every song has that same vibe. There are a lot of cool guitar parts going on, and all in all the album is very “Cureish” with the use of a lot of delays. Fans of the early Blink 182 sound will probably not like this album. artist website

I dig Damien Rice as well. If you seriously find yourself getting in to that kind of inspired folk you should definitely check out Ray LaMontagne, Iron & Wine and Mason Jennings.

I purchased the Gnarls Barkley album the other day on a tip from my younger brother and I think it’s incredible. I’m not sure how to classify it. It’s like a new kind of hip-hop for those of us that don’t like hip-hop but appreciate soul music. So, you should give it a listen even if you’re not a hip-hop fan - you might just like it.
